Facebook Launches Group Calling Feature in Messenger

Facebook announced that their Messenger app will now support group calls on iOS6 and Android. Messenger has seen some big updates in the last week, and is rolling out it’s newest feature in the next 24 hours. TechCrunch’s Josh Constine reported that can tap a phone icon and choose which members of the chat that they want to call. A messenger is sent to each user and can join in on the call at any point. Facebook says that up to 50 people can be on at any call.

Constine went on to say that Facebook is hoping to replace your phone number, in hopes that it will connect users who are yet to be friends, which is a great tool for conference calls. Like me, you may be concerned with online harassment. Luckily, Facebook makes it easy to block users who may be harassing you on Messenger. It also gives you the ability to to send solicitors a pre-made message telling them you cannot be sold. Perhaps this an indication that Facebook wants to take Skype’s place as the premiere online calling tool. Once Facebook begins adding video to this feature, it may spell the end of Skype.
