Big Changes Coming to Instagram

Instagram, the popular photo-sharing app owned by Facebook, is making big changes. Taylor Loren of Latergramme is reporting that Instagram will now allow multiple account switching on iOS. While this doesn’t seem like much, this may be due to the rise in popularity of “Fake Instagram” accounts or “Finstagram” for short. “Finstagrams” are accounts used to share more vulnerable, inside information that one might not share on their own Instagram account. While Instagram is almost exclusively used to share the highlights of your day-to-day life, a “Finstagram” account may be used to share inside jokes and more personal news, or it could even used to badmouth other people who follow you on your regular Instagram account.

Another big change coming to Instagram is the increase in video duration, which will jump all the way to 60 seconds. This change comes as an attempt to attract businesses to invest in advertising through Instagram. An official Instagram spokesperson told TechCrunch “We recognize that advertisers have a variety of creative resources and want to bring more choice to help them reach their business goals.” This attempt to attract advertisers is already working, as T-Mobile and Warner Bros. are already promoting 60-second videos on Instagram. It will be interesting to see how quickly other big brands follow suit.
