Grand Apps Team Highlight | Lauren Allen

We are very excited to announce that we are bringing a new member to our Grand Apps team very soon. This is a very special announcement as well because this marks history at Grand Apps as Lauren will be the first lady in the office.

Lauren will be a new member to our design & development team and add much value to Grand Apps. She is well rounded in logo desgin, graphic design and more. We are looking forward to having her begin her journey here at Grand Apps.

We recently asked her to give us her story & help us craft a team member highlight Q&A. Below is the conversation.

What is your background?

I moved to Grand Rapids in 2008 to attend Grand Valley for Marketing and Writing. After graduation in 2012, I worked at Revue Holding Company as an Account Executive of ad sales. While working there, I found myself jealous of the Graphic Designer, which made me reconsider a lot of things. I eventually decided to go back to school to study Graphic Design. I started at Kendall this past January and have absolutely loved it!

You will be in design, what do you love most about design?

I love so much about design! I love that good design can tell a story; that a certain color can provoke a feeling and that a font can say more than what the letters read. I love that it's universal in the sense that everyone has a album cover that caught their eye or a magazine cover that enticed them to pick it up.

What do you think you will add to the Grand Apps team?

Besides being the only girl in the office? :) I hope to bring a unique personal style to the work I produce. I also think my Marketing background will help me bring business-driven art, and my writing could be used to write/proofread content. Not to mention, I try to bring a sense of humor to anything I do so get ready to laugh.

What are you most excited about starting with Grand Apps?

I'm most excited to see how real life graphic designers work - their individual process and that mixed into a bigger company with deadlines and clients. I also can't wait to learn tricks for producing better design.

Do you have any other work you can show us?

One of my favorite projects I've worked on is a type specimen book. It's a series of eight cards that display different fonts, their history, etc. I'm a bit of a typography nerd so I really got into it. I attached a PDF of the cards if you want to take a look at it. It's a bit out of order, because I arranged it for printing purposed but I think you'll get the idea.

Favorite font? Favorite colors? Favorite designs?

My favorite font is Helvetica Ultralight, which is actually what my resume is in. I'm not a big fan of colors in general and, when I have the choice, tend to stick with grayscale. That being said, I do like those weird in-between colors, like greenish brown and reddish orange. As far as favorite designs go, I absolutely love Swiss Design and most things minimalist.

What is your favorite logo of all time?

Picking a favorite logo is so hard! But I do really like the Birmingham Museum of Art's logo by Chris Yoon; it's simple, clean, minimalist - all the things I like.
